Awami League declares month-long programme to mark Black August

In August, Bangladesh witnessed some of the most tragic events in its historyโ€”the brutal assassinations in 1975 and the heinous grenade attack of 2004.

Moreover, in August 2024, anti-liberation and anti-state forcesโ€”nurtured by Pakistani ideologyโ€”unlawfully seized state power through a deep domestic and international conspiracy.

These incidents disrupted the path toward a prosperous Bangladesh and shut all doors of opportunity, the Bangladesh Awami League said on Friday.

This year marks the 50th martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Bangabandhu and the four national leaders

โ€œBangabandhu dreamed of a hunger- and poverty-free society, rooted in equality. Under the courageous leadership of his daughter, Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh rose to global recognition as a developing, dignified nationโ€”free from hunger and poverty.โ€

But today, that vision has shattered. National capabilities and the economy have collapsed. Peopleโ€™s lives and livelihoods are under a grave threat. Law and order have deteriorated. Citizens no longer feel safe.

โ€œBy seizing power undemocratically and violating the sacred Constitution, the fascist forces of Yunus have robbed people of their voice and freedom. A reign of fear looms across the country. But this wall of fear must be struck down with the strength of ideals and courage.

โ€œWe must transform Augustโ€™s sorrow into strength, light the torch of resistance, and usher in a new dawn of hope.โ€

In mid-July, the Awami League declared a hartal programme and asked its leaders, workers, and supporters to prepare for the Long March to Jamuna as the final attempt to unseat the fascist Yunus.
