BNP-Affiliated Cattle Market Causes Estimated Tk 3.025 Million in Damage Near Uttara Metro Station

Dhaka, Bangladesh โ€” A cattle market organized during Eid-ul-Adha by Dhaka North units of the Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal, an affiliate organization of the BNP, has allegedly caused approximately Tk 3.025 million (30.25 lakh) in damages to public infrastructure and landscaping around Uttara Center Metro Station, according to findings from an investigation by the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

The organization had been granted a lease to operate a temporary cattle market in the Diabari Boubazar area. However, DNCC officials claim that the market expanded beyond its designated boundaries, occupying areas beneath the metro station, adjacent footpaths, landscaped zones, and protected infrastructure.

According to the investigation report, damage to trees and landscaping is estimated at Tk 1.93 million, while destruction of protective fencing amounted to approximately Tk 600,000. An additional Tk 500,000 was reportedly spent on post-market cleaning and waste removal, bringing the total estimated loss to Tk 3.025 million.

City officials stated that repeated warnings were issued to the leaseholders to remain within the approved area. However, the instructions were allegedly ignored, and organizers reportedly maintained that the disputed areas were covered under their lease agreement.

The incident has sparked criticism from various quarters, with observers raising concerns about compliance with regulations and the protection of public property. Critics argue that infrastructure built with public funds should be safeguarded, particularly in sensitive areas such as metro rail facilities.

In response, the DNCC administration has ordered that the estimated damages be recovered from the leaseholder’s security deposit. Officials emphasized that accountability is necessary to prevent similar incidents in the future and to ensure respect for public assets.

The controversy has also reignited political debate, with opponents questioning the commitment of BNP-affiliated organizations to governance, discipline, and public responsibility. BNP representatives have yet to issue a detailed public response regarding the allegations and the investigation findings.

The incident remains under public scrutiny as authorities assess the full extent of the damage and consider further administrative actions.
