Sylhet ADSM coordinator jailed for threatening land officer

Both Jamaat-e-Islami and the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) have denied having known Md. Mahbubur Rahman, who was detained and sentenced to two months in prison for threatening government employees in Sylhet.

Mahbubur, 32, identified him as a Jamaat activist and convener of the ADSMโ€™s Osmaninagar Upazila of Sylhet. He is the son of Abdur Razzak of Sadipur village in Sadipur Union of the upazila.

Osmaninagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Joynal Abedin confirmed the matter.

He said: โ€œMahbubur had been threatening several officials, including the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land), by posing as a Jamaat leader and convener of the anti-discrimination student movement and obstructing government work. He threatened to besiege the office with students and vandalise it if they did not comply with his demands.

โ€œHe came to the office again on Monday (July 28) and threatened us. At that time, a mobile court was set up, and he was handed down fines and a prison sentence. We later handed him over to the Osmaninagar police station.โ€

According to the mobile court sources, Mahbubur had been pressuring the tehsildars of the union land office to register land without documents by introducing himself as the coordinator and leader of the Osmaninagar branch of the ADSM.

On July 28, he went to the upazila land office on the same issue and continued to pressure the officials. Upon receiving the news, the UNO went to the land office and conducted a mobile court.

Akhter Hossain, the convener of ADSM in Sylhet district, said that they did not declare any convening committee in Osmaninagar.

Osmaninagar Upazila Jamaat Secretary Anhar Ahmed told the daily Prothom Alo that Mahbubur was not a member of the Jamaat.

The activities of all ADSM committees across the country, except the central committee, were suspended on July 27, after five student leaders were arrested for extorting Tk50 lakh from a former parliamentarian of the Awami League in Gulshan.
