August 8: The day democracy bled

On August 8, 2024, in blatant disregard for the Constitution of Bangladesh, the fascist Yunus illegally seized state power due to the collective failure of the countryโ€™s democratic institutions and law enforcement agencies, marking this as one of the darkest chapters in history.

โ€œThis day is not only a black mark in our timeline but also a stark warning to us allโ€”how crucial it is to stay vigilant in defense of democracy and to raise our voices against non-cooperation and injustice,โ€ the Awami League said in a statement.

Violating the Constitution means dismantling the fundamental structure of governance and stripping people of their rights. Through this heinous attempt, fascist Yunus has endangered the nationโ€™s peace and stability, shaking the very foundations of unity and cohesion.

The protest against this barbarity was clear and forceful. The Awami League, along with the people of the Dhaka-8 constituencyโ€”particularly the residents of the capitalโ€™s Hatirpoolโ€”stood united in protest marches representing all walks of life, strongly condemning this conspiracy, the statement said.

This protest was not just against the seizure of power but a strong signal of the commitment to protect democracy, the Constitution, and peopleโ€™s rights.

โ€œWe call upon everyone to commemorate this Black Day and to remain united in safeguarding the countryโ€™s democracy. No nation can progress without respecting its Constitution. Therefore, people from all sectors must unite against this atrocity and remain constantly vigilant to ensure development, good governance, and the rule of law in the country.โ€
