Activists of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM), linked to Chhatra Dal, foiled a prayer meeting held in memory of the โJuly Martyrsโ at the Collector Mosque in Khulna city on Tuesday, as the district administration did not invite the coordinators.
They alleged that Khulna Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam organised the event with โcontroversial and Awami League friendsโ instead of the real โJuly Warriorsโ and coordinators of the movement.
Recently, the ADSM activists were angry with DC Saiful as he did not give them permission for a 36-day festival. The students later held a press conference and alleged that the DC behaved disrespectfully towards them. They also presented a list of allegations against the DC, including sheltering the Awami League, ignoring the โJuly Warriors,โ and abusing power.

The father of Khulna martyr Shakib Raihan was present at the prayer event. Abdullah Al Shafil, who lost his eye in the movement, was also present. Khulna Divisional Commissioner Firoz Sarkar was present as the chief guest at the event.

The DC said: โA group that does not want the success of the July movement came to obstruct such a sacred event like a prayer mahfil. They have insulted the father of Shakib and the injured. Shakib’s father cried after the verbal abuse.โ
ADSM leader Saif Nawaz said an activist of the Chhatra Dal insulted the July fighters. โWe condemn it. And if the government takes any action against those who create chaos at the government event, we will stand by the decision.โ
On the other hand, Sajidul Islam Bapi, member secretary of the ADSMโs district unit, said the maximum number of July fighters should have participated in the prayer mahfil. โBut no July fighters participated in this event. This is not a dispute. This is a step to establish the rights of the real July fighters.โ
During the event, an ADSM activist started a strong protest. He could not be identified immediately.
He complained that the DC organised the prayer meeting with Awami Leagueโs friends and students from various secret organisations. โNone of those who were actually injured in this movement, who led from the front, were invited to the event. Those who have been invited to this event are thieves.โ

He also said: โNone of the coordinators or co-coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement of Khulna district and the metropolitan units have been invited to this event. The Deputy Commissioner is behaving unilaterally and is being extremely arbitrary here.โ
