Since the blood-soaked July 2024 uprising that toppled the elected government, it has been clear that the real target of this coup was not just the administration but the complete annihilation of the Awami League and all forces aligned with the Liberation War.
The plans of Yunus and his foreign patrons were far-reaching. Immediately after seizing power, Yunus and his foreign patrons handed over the prison management to individuals whose appointments reveal a sinister intent: turning jails into slaughterhouses for systematic extermination.
Strategic Appointments of Jamaat-BNP Affiliates in Prisons
The Inspector General of Prisons, Brigadier General Motahar, was a Shibir leader at Chittagong Collegeโa former Chhatra Shibir cadre who now heads the entire prison system. Additional IG Jahangir Kabir is affiliated with the BNP and served as the superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail during Khaleda Zia’s tenure. In essence, the keys to the life and death of imprisoned Awami League leaders and workers have been entrusted to those who harbour deep hatred for the Awami League, whose politics are rooted in opposition to the Liberation War.

DIG Tipu Sultan, from Gopalganj, is actively linked to Jamaat. What a cruel ironyโa person from Bangabandhu’s birthplace aligns with the ideology of his killers and holds a high prison post. Dhaka Central Jail’s Senior Jail Superintendent Suraiya Akter is an active Jamaat-Shibir member, overseeing the most severe tortures on political prisoners. In Kashimpur High Security Prison, Abdullah Al Mamun was involved in Shibir at Dhaka University. The Women’s Central Jail has Kawalin Nahar, also from Jamaat-Shibir.
In every major prison and senior position, either BNP loyalists or Jamaat-Shibir cadres have been placed. Gazipur Jail Superintendent Rafiqul Kader is the nephew-in-law of BNP leader Salauddin Ahmed. In Cumilla, Halima Khatun is Jamaat-aligned; in Mymensingh, Amirul Islam was in Shibir at Dhaka University; in Chittagong, Iqbal Hossain; in Sylhet, Nahida Parvin; and in Jessore, Nurshad Ahmedโall Jamaat sympathisers. In Feni, Abdul Jalil; in Chuadanga, Asadur Rahman; and in Tangail, Shahidul Islamโall active Jamaat members.

Jamaat activist and ASH Foundation Chairman Engineer Muhammed Nasir Uddin was made the private inspector of Chittagong Central Jail. He is also a member of the Consumer Rights Protection Committee. Recently, he started building a mosque and an orphanage in Nepal to spread Islam, while appearing on social media frequently with Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Tayyaba leader Mufti Harun Izhar.
Do these patterns of appointments seem like routine administrative decisions? Absolutely not. It is a meticulously planned setup, transforming prisons into factories for destroying Awami League leaders and workers. Those who collaborated with Pakistani forces in 1971, whose hands are stained with blood, and who returned to politics under Ziaur Rahman’s patronage after Bangabandhu’s assassinationโthese Jamaat-Shibir elements have been given the responsibility to torture Liberation War supporters.
Planned Extermination and Revenge in Custody
Yunus and his foreign backers know that merely seizing power is not enough. As long as the Awami League exists and people carrying the spirit of the Liberation War survive, their illegitimate rule cannot endure. Thus, a planned extermination campaign is underway in prisons. During Sheikh Hasina’s government, Jamaat leaders faced executions for war crimes. Today, that revenge is being exacted on imprisoned Awami League members, with Jamaat-BNP cadres in charge.

Bangladesh, a nation born under the Awami League’s leadership, for which three million people sacrificed their lives, is now witnessing the murder of that party’s members in jails. Those for whom the Liberation War was the greatest defeat and 1971 the ultimate shame are now perched in prisons, unleashing atrocities on pro-Liberation forces. This is no accident; it is deliberate. It is a project to revert Bangladesh to Pakistan.

Escalating Death Toll Amid Torture and Neglect
The scale of this silent killing is alarming. At least 37 Awami League leaders and workers have been killed in prisons through torture and medical neglect since July 2024. This is part of a broader wave of violence, including over 60 extrajudicial killings and more than 1,000 deaths in mob violence alongside arbitrary arrests targeting Awami League affiliates and pro-Liberation War elements. These figures highlight the interim government’s complicity in allowing such atrocities to persist unchecked, further eroding the foundations of justice and human rights in the country.
