Exiled former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina alleged that Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus, who grabbed power in August last year, personally orchestrated a wave of political violence that has now turned inward, with anti-Awami League forces engaging in mutual killings after effectively neutralising her party.
In a blistering virtual speech delivered on Saturday during an online conference with supporters, Sheikh Hasina claimed that the Awami League has been “banned” and rendered powerless. “The Awami League is no longer in the field. They cannot operate,” she declared, adding that this vacuum has led to infighting among those who seized power.
“They shoot and kill one another, then loudly mourn the victimโoften the killers themselves wailing the loudest,” Sheikh Hasina charged, describing recent incidents as evidence of hypocrisy and self-destruction within the ruling factions.
Yunus โMeticulously Designedโ the Violence
The five-time premier directly implicated Yunus in the bloodshed that began on July 16, 2024, amid the student-led uprising that toppled her government. “When I attempted to form a judicial inquiry commission, Yunus blocked it. Why? Because he is personally involvedโthese killings occurred under his meticulous design, and the ongoing violence follows the same blueprint.”

Sheikh Hasina alleged that militants and terrorists were released from prisons, armed, and unleashed to dismantle the Awami League. “The Awami League is now homeless, jobless, stripped of homes and livelihoodsโeverything lost. Unable to find us, they have turned on each other. This internal slaughter has already started and will intensify after the election schedule announcement.”
She highlighted a stark disparity in justice: “Those responsible for the July killings received indemnityโfull immunityโwhile Awami League leaders and workers face bogus cases.”
Breakdown in Rule of Law and Call for Unity
Painting a picture of anarchy, Sheikh Hasina lamented the collapse of legal institutions. “There is no rule of law, no justice systemโnothing. Victims cannot file cases; instead, complaints are lodged against them. The killers are celebrated.”
In a rallying cry, she urged those affectedโparticularly victims of arson and displacementโto unite. “Merely weeping from afar won’t suffice. If everyone whose homes were burned stands together, where will these terrorists and oppressors flee?”
Sheikh Hasina concluded defiantly: “They will have to pay the price.”
