Awami League protests torture of partyโ€™s women leaders, activists in prisons

The Bangladesh Awami League has expressed deep concern that the illegal usurper, killer-fascist Yunus and his clique are sparing no means in carrying out oppression and persecution against Awami League leaders and activists.

โ€œFalse and harassing cases have been filed against Bangabandhuโ€™s daughter, Peopleโ€™s Leader Sheikh Hasina, along with leaders and activists at all levels of the Awami League, and they are being unjustly kept behind bars. Moreover, inside the prisons, many have been killed through torture, while inhuman physical and mental abuse continues unabated,โ€ the party said in a statement on Sunday.

โ€œNow, this illegal usurper has introduced new brutal methods of subjecting women leaders and activists to extreme barbaric torture inside the prisons. When they try to speak to the jail superintendent about any issue, they are physically humiliated, and if they protest, the guards and other inmates are used to inflicting further disgraceful abuse and torture. To maximise harassment, they are also shown arrested in false and fabricated cases across different parts of the country and then transferred to various prisons.

โ€œOn behalf of the Bangladesh Awami League, we strongly protest this extreme and despicable torture and persecution. Such horrific accounts of abuse will wound the conscience of any right-minded person, and their collective outrage will rise up to deliver a crushing response against these tyrant, killer-fascist Yunus clique, Inshallah.โ€

Activists of the Awami League have identified two senior officials of the Kashimpur Central Jail-2, which is dedicated to women prisoners, who have been torturing the imprisoned leaders and activists of the party since last year, as per the orders of the Yunus regime.

The accused are Rizia Begum, the jailer, and Kawalin Nahar, the senior jail superintendent.

According to family members of the imprisoned party members, Rizia Begum gives the instructions of torture against female leaders of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations, while Kawalin Nahar engages selected jail inmates to torture the targeted political prisoners.

Although the allegations first spread through social media, sources say that several female leaders brought to Kashimpur Womenโ€™s Jail were systematically tortured after the recent political changes.

A convict named Chumki was used to physically torture political prisoners on the orders of Kawalin Nahar. It is alleged that Chumki was used for this heinous act in exchange for giving special privileges. To increase the level of torture, Kawalin Nahar called in additional forces from outside the prison and baton-charged the female leaders.

Multiple sources confirmed that an inhumane situation has been created by cutting off the water supply to their cells and giving low-quality food, ignoring the jail code. Prisoners, including former minister Dr. Dipu Moni, are among the victims.

Similarly, Rizia Begum has also been accused of directly participating in the physical and mental torture of the prisoners. Many are expressing their anger on social media, citing her as one of the main perpetrators of the masterplan.

The allegations surfaced at a time when hundreds of Awami League members have been killed in planned attacks across the country, with the perpetrators enjoying impunity, while at least 70 party leaders and activists have been killed extrajudicially by the law enforcers and inside prisons.

Since the allegations of torture in the Kashimpur jail came to light, various human rights organisations and political circles have strongly condemned them, demanding a speedy judicial investigation and exemplary action against the culprits.
