Awami League Minister AH Mahmood Ali dies at 82

Former Minister of Finance, Foreign Affairs, and Relief, and former Member of Parliament for the Dinajpur-4 constituency, Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, died on Thursday evening. He was 82.

He was suffering from kidney disease and had been admitted to the ICU of BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka for the past two weeks.

Born on June 2, 1943, in Doctorpara village of Khanasama upazila in Dinajpur, Mahmood Ali was the son of Hasan Ali, a former minister of the then Pakistan government.

He earned his bachelorโ€™s degree in economics from Dhaka University in 1962 and completed his masterโ€™s the following year.

In 1964, he briefly taught at the same university before joining Pakistanโ€™s Foreign Service in 1966.

While serving as a diplomat under the Pakistan government, he played a significant role in favour of Bangladeshโ€™s independence during the 1971 Liberation War.

After serving diplomatic duties in various countries, Mahmood Ali joined the Awami League in 2001 and was elected a member of the party’s election committee. In 2002, he became a member of the Central Advisory Committee. Later, he was elected co-chairman of the Awami League’s International Affairs Sub-Committee.

In the 2008 general election, Mahmood Ali was elected a member of Parliament from Dinajpur-4. He was the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the 9th National Parliament.

In 2012, he was given the responsibility of the newly formed Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and served as the Minister of this Ministry until 2013. In 2013, he was appointed as the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh.

When he was re-elected as a member of Parliament in the 2014 election, he was sworn in as the Minister of Foreign Affairs again. When he was re-elected in the 12th National Parliament election in 2024, he was given the responsibility of the Ministry of Finance.
