Awami League: 1,300 processions in 10 months, 700 members brutally killed

The Awami League party has started a strong movement across the country to protest the reckless repression, imprisonment and extrajudicial killings of party leaders and activists during the tenure of the illegal fascist regime of Dr. Muhammad Yunus.

The Awami League has organised more than 1,300 protest processions and rallies across the country, with a particular focus on the capital city of Dhaka.

However, due to the strict repression policy of the ruling interim government, these processions have faced difficult challenges. Despite the large number of processions, the arrests and harassment of leaders and activists have left the law enforcers largely at a loss to deal with the situation.

Starting from July last year, the crackdown on the Awami League increased in February through the Operation Devil Hunt before banning its activities until the trials ended at the Jamaat-controlled International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD).

Awami League leaders and activists have alleged that Dr. Yunus’ government is carrying out the most terrible repression in history on them to satisfy a political vendetta.

Currently, about 2,50,000 Awami League leaders and activists are imprisoned in political cases. Many of them have faced brutal torture and denied bail and medical care, resulting in the death of 32 leaders and activists in prisons.

Due to the brutal tactics of the Yunus regime, over 40 people were killed extrajudicially by law enforcers, and about 700 others were killed by political opponents in the last 14 months.

Moreover, about 2,00,00,000 leaders and activists of the party have been forced to leave their homes and go into hiding due to the government’s continuous lawsuits and harassment.

Party President and five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and top leaders have strongly condemned the crackdown and demanded an immediate end to political vendettas, the release of detained leaders and activists, and an impartial investigation into the extrajudicial killings.
