List of agreements with India, posted by Asif Mahmud, is false, says foreign adviser

Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain said that the list that has come up on social media, saying that 10 agreements with India have been cancelled is not correct. He said this in response to questions from reporters at the Foreign Ministry on Tuesday afternoon.

Foreign Affairs Adviser Touhid Hossain said that the list that has come up was given and circulated by someone. It was probably retweeted by an adviser. Most of it (the agreements in the list) do not exist.”

Stating that an agreement with India was cancelled a long time ago, the foreign adviser said: โ€œThere are some of the rest that are at different stages and are not under the same name. There is a different description (description).โ€

On Monday, a post on the verified Facebook page of mob leader-turned-Local Government and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuyain said: โ€œDiscussions on the agreements started after the interim government took charge and this decision was taken after proper review.โ€

A list was added below it. Its title reads: โ€œ10 agreements made with India during the Hasina government have been cancelled, the rest are also under consideration.โ€

The foreign affairs adviser said, although the Tripura-Chittagong rail link project was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no such project. Although the Abhaypur-Akhaura railway extension was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no such project. Although the Ashuganj-Agartala corridor was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no project with this exact name.

However, a project called โ€œAshuganj-Sarail-Dharkhar Projectโ€ is ongoing. Only one package has been cancelled under that project (Package 3: Dharakhar to Akhaura Land Port). Although the Feni River Water Management Project was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no project by this name. However, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Bangladesh and India in 2019 for the withdrawal of 1.82 cusecs of water for the drinking water supply to Sabroom city of Tripura. That Memorandum of Understanding was not cancelled.

The adviser said that the Kushiyara River Water Sharing Project was mentioned as suspended on social media. There is no project by this name. However, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Bangladesh and India in 2022 on the withdrawal of water from the common river Kushiyara. The Memorandum of Understanding was not suspended. Although the Road and Waterway Development Agreement regarding the use of ports was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no agreement by this name. However, an agreement was signed between Bangladesh and India in 2018 on the transport of goods using Chittagong and Mongla ports. The agreement has not been cancelled. The agreement is in force.

Touhid Hossain said that although Bangladesh’s financial cooperation proposal for the Farakka Dam project was mentioned as cancelled on social media, the concerned ministry is not aware of any such proposal. Although the Sylhet-Silchar connection project was mentioned as cancelled on social media, there is no such project. Although the petroleum pipeline expansion agreement was mentioned as cancelled on social media, no such agreement was made with India. There was initial discussion with India to expand the pipeline from Numaligarh in India to Parbatipur in Dinajpur, Bangladesh, under the Bangladesh-India Friendship Pipeline. But no agreement was made in this regard.

The advisor said that the Indian Economic Zone projects (Mirsarai and Mongla) have been mentioned on social media as being cancelled. The process of cancelling the financing of those projects under the Indian Line of Credit (LoC) is underway.
