HRSS: Human rights situation in Bangladesh is alarming

The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) has said that the incidents of political violence, women abuse, minority abuse and attacks on journalists have increased significantly in the country since August last year.

On Thursday, Executive Director of HRSS Ijazul Islam said in a press release that attacks on journalists have increased significantly, with 340 journalists being killed, tortured and harassed in 236 attacks in nine months.

At this time, 103 journalists have been accused in 29 cases. At least 25 people have been accused, and 13 people have been arrested in 18 cases under the Cyber โ€‹โ€‹Security Act.

According to the HRSS, 130 people were killed and 212 were injured in 239 incidents of mob violence and lynching between January and September.

Moreover, there has been an increase in the trend of beating people to death, harassing and humiliating them on suspicion of theft or robbery.

During this time, 61 prisoners died in different prisons in the country. Among them are 19 prisoners and 42 prisoners. According to the report, at least seven Awami League leaders were among the dead.

At this time, 1,511 women and girls were victims of torture across the country, including 663 victims of rape. 393 of the rape victims were under 18 years of age. Besides, 152 people were victims of gang rape, 19 people were killed after rape, and nine people committed suicide.

At the same time, 1 thousand 65 children were subjected to torture, of which 209 lost their lives.

According to HRSS, 28 people were killed in the custody of law enforcement agencies, in clashes or torture. Among them, eight people died in a gunfight, four people died in torture, 10 people died in custody, and six people died of bullet wounds.

According to the report, 166 cases have been filed in the name of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Awami League and other political leaders and activists.

In these cases, 10,385 people have been named, and 34,137 people have been made anonymous. During this period, 44,962 people were arrested, most of whom were members of Awami League and its affiliates.

In nine months of 2025, at least 74 people were killed and 828 were injured in 176 incidents of labour torture. According to the report, 104 workers lost their lives at work due to an unhealthy working environment and a lack of safety equipment.

According to HRSS, the number of human rights violations is increasing, and the quality of law and order and democracy in the country is being damaged. The organisation called on the government to play a more responsible role in protecting human rights.
