โ€œA courtroom is the highest place of the state to seek justice. Such a murder on the court premises raises questions of women’s access to justice and their safety,โ€ the statement added.

According to news reports, the accused Akhtar Hossain used to torture his wife, Sharifa Akhtar, for dowry. As a result, a family dispute arose between them following their divorce on July 12.

Later, Akhter Hossain filed a case in court demanding his daughter’s custody. For this, both parties appeared in court on October 6. At that time, Sharifa Akhter had an argument with Akhtar Hossain about the custody of their daughter.

At one stage of the argument, Akhter Hossain stabbed Sharifa Akhter, leaving her seriously injured. She was first admitted to the Upazila Health Complex and was shifted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where she died while undergoing treatment.

Netizens vehemently condemned the murder and blamed the culture of impunity for perpetrators of mob attacks and violence against women that have been taking place since the fall of the Awami League government last year.

Some social media users said Sharifa Akhtar was the former general secretary of the Dharmapasha Jubo Mahila League unit.
