DUCSU Polls: Dhaka University Chhatra Shibirโ€™s deception exposed

The Islami Chhatra Shibir is unpopular for the โ€œblood-spillingโ€ activities, like cutting the tendons of students for opposing their views. It is also disgraced for armed cadre politics, and the planned murder of pro-liberation student leaders, teachers and activists.

In 2013, Shibir became desperate to save the top Jamaat leaders accused of crimes against humanity in 1971. They conducted a covert campaign on social media to distort the history of the Liberation War, spread extremist ideology and malign the Awami League and other pro-liberation activists.

In the following years, Shibir activists also took part in targeted killings along with the members of banned militant groups like Ansar al-Islam, Hizb ut-Tahrir, Jamaโ€™atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and the Islamic State (IS). For these reasons, Shibir has always been identified as a terrorist organisation.

During this time, Shibir activists intruded on the Chhatra League, Chhatra Dal and leftist organisations of Dhaka University, alongside facilitating the formation of new student groups like the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad and Ganatantrik Chhatra Shakti.

The leftist girl of Dhaka University who once wore jeans and tops in the art school now always wears a hijab. She also talks big about the country. It was being said that the ordinary student, Samantha Sharmin, who was a member of Shibirโ€™s secret branch in a leftist organisation, is now the spokesperson for Yunus’ King’s Party National Citizen Party (NCP), a pro-Jamaat party.

Not only Samantha, but also many others in Shibir were once secretly involved in various student groups, including the Chhatra League. Now, taking advantage of the opportunity, they have revealed their faces. Jamaat-Shibir is implementing various anti-national activities through them.

Another leader like Samantha is Fatima Tasnim Juma of the radical Inqilab Moncho. This former Chhatra League leader has changed her mind. She is also running for the Shibir panel in the DUCSU elections. Once she worked in liquor bars and brothels, but now she is trying to deceive people in the name of religion.

Meanwhile, Shibir activists are subjecting women to cyberbullying ahead of the student union elections since it has always maintained a well-equipped team to run disinformation campaigns and spread hatred on social media.

Fatima Tasnim Juma, the Liberation War and Democratic Movement Affairs Secretary candidate of the United Student Union Panel supported by Chhatra Shibir in the DUCSU elections, said that she, too, has been subjected to bullying by Shibir’s bot IDs.

Abdul Kader, convener of the Dhaka University branch of the Democratic Student Union and former coordinator of the anti-discrimination student movement, has also revealed more horrifying information about Shibir. In a Facebook post, he wrote that the activists of Chhatra Shibir who were actively involved in Chhatra League due to their presence were mainly involved in very enthusiastic activities, in some cases, to overcome their identity crisis.

That was due to the responsibility of proving themselves to be Chhatra League members. They were partners in the oppression and torture that the Chhatra League carried out, he added.

Allegations of the administration pressuring female students in public universities of Bangladesh to join Islamic student organisations, especially organisations affiliated with Jamaat-e-Islami, have been raised for a long time. Recently, Amanullah Aman, the central organising secretary of Chhatra Dal, has made serious allegations in this regard.

Aman claimed that female students at Rajshahi University (RU) and other public universities are being forced to join Islamic student organisations through administrative pressure and intimidation.

According to his claim, the influence of the camp is not limited to students only, but some sections of the university administration are also involved in it. He also claimed that the unusual number of support or comments on the campโ€™s social media indicates their use of bot IDs, which is not in line with their real strength.

Aman said that the administration’s pressure is a major reason behind the failure to form student committees in six halls of Rajshahi University. He said that the politics of RU are different from other campuses. The hall provosts pressure the students to join the Islamic student organisation. The students who want to join the student organisation do not come out of fear.

Through this allegation, he indicated that the hall provosts are directly or indirectly influencing the students and controlling their political choices. As a result of such pressure, the students are afraid to join other student organisations like Chhatra Dal.

A recent incident at Dhaka University is significant in the context of this allegation.

In September, a female student, BM Fahmida Alam, faced gang rape threats after she filed a writ petition against a candidate supported by the Chhatra Shibir in the DUCSU elections. The accused student is Ali Husen, a student of the 2020-2021 session of the Department of Sociology.

The university administration formed an investigation committee into the incident and expelled Ali Husen for six months. This incident proves that threats and intimidation against female students are happening not only at Rajshahi University but also at the top universities.

The student protests at Chittagong Premier University have shown that female students are being cyberbullied and harassed by Shibir leaders and activists. Such incidents are having a profound impact on the mental and social security of the students.

The university administration lacks transparency and effective action in investigating such allegations. Although an investigation committee has been formed into the Dhaka University threat incident, such incidents are happening repeatedly, raising questions about the administration’s accountability.

Chhatra Shibir has been in the news for a long time for allegations of violence and intimidation on campus. Despite publicly claiming to be a peaceful organisation, Shibir is still accused of trying to distort the history of the Liberation War and propagating extremist ideology. Jamaat’s aim is to take the country to the state it was in before 1971. This will also avenge their defeat in the Liberation War.

Earlier, various Pakistani media outlets had also reported the same. Pakistani diplomatic activity after the political change is giving that indication.

Political analysts say that the recent visits and campaigns of the Pakistani government, activists and militant groups are linked to a kind of historical reverse engineering, where there is an attempt to pull Bangladesh back into Pakistan’s sphere of influence. Jamaat-Shibir activists are carrying out various conspiracies to mislead the youth in the plan of this group.
