Khagrachhari students and parents are in grave danger of further attacks and intimidation by the army personnel and Muslim settlers as they keep protesting the gang rape of an eighth-grade Tripura girl in Bhaibon Chhora Union.

Murders, violent attacks, and rapes have been common incidents in the district due to lawlessness and anti-Adivasi hatred since the Jamaat-backed interim government took office.

The incident came to light after the girlโs father filed a case against six Bangali settlers on Wednesday night.
The next morning, several hundred students brought out a procession at Bhaibon Chhora Bazar to demand the quick arrest of the rapists and their exemplary punishment. However, the army personnel brutally beat them.
The case states that the rape occurred on June 27, while the girl was at a relative’s house. Six young men entered the house late at night, tied up her relative, and raped her. Due to social stigma and fear, the girl did not reveal anything to anyone at first.

Culture of impunity

The district saw a wave of communal attacks when three indigenous people were killed, and their houses and shops were looted and torched on September 19. The victims are Rouja Tripura, 21, Junan Chakma, 21, and Dhananjay Chakma, 50.
The following day, the violence spread to Rangamati, where Anik Chakma, 17, was hacked to death on the street by some Bangali settlers in just 12 seconds.
A video of the killing went viral on social media, but there has been no progress in the investigation in the last ten months.

Sohel Rana was transferred to Khagrachhari after being proven guilty of raping another student in Doulotpur, Kushtia. Learning about his past, the college students staged a demonstration in the town on September 5, demanding that his transfer order be revoked and he be expelled from the profession. But the authorities took no steps.
