Fuel Price Hike Puts Pressure on Ordinary People

The recent increase in fuel and gas prices has created significant financial pressure on low- and middle-income families across Bangladesh. Households in the capital and beyond are struggling to cope with rising daily expenses.

Habibur Rahman, a Dhaka resident earning around 58,000 taka per month, says he now has to borrow money to manage his family expenses. Beef and fruits have been cut from their meals, and even simple family outings on weekends have stopped. His situation reflects that of many urban families facing similar hardship.

The government recently raised the prices of gas and fuel. The cost of a 12 kg LPG cylinder has increased by about 600 taka in one step. In addition, the prices of diesel, kerosene, and octane have also gone up significantly. Experts say these increases are directly affecting the prices of essential goods.

Families without access to pipeline gas are particularly affected, as they rely on LPG for cooking. Laizu Begum, a domestic worker, said the higher cylinder price has made it difficult to manage her household budget. โ€œI can no longer afford everything I used to buy,โ€ she explained.

Economists note that higher fuel prices lead to increased transportation costs, which in turn raise the prices of everyday items. Already, the prices of eggs, rice, chicken, and edible oil have risen. Market analysts point to supply chain issues and weak monitoring as factors worsening the situation.

Consumer rights groups have also raised concerns about inadequate market oversight, allowing some to take advantage of the situation by increasing prices further. They emphasize the need for stronger government intervention to protect consumers.

With inflation already high, the rising cost of living is becoming a major challenge for ordinary people. Experts stress that decisions in the energy sector should carefully consider their broader economic and social impact.

Overall, the fuel price hike has had a clear and widespread effect on peopleโ€™s daily lives, raising concerns across different sectors of society.
