A leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in Nawabganj upazila of Dinajpur has been accused of attempting to rape a housewife after allegedly luring her with the promise of a TCB family card. The incident reportedly took place on the afternoon of February 23 in a village of the upazila.
According to local sources, the accused, Iqbal Hossain, acting secretary of the upazila BNP, went to his nephewโs house on that day. He allegedly assured his nephewโs wife that he could arrange a Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) family card for her. Taking advantage of the situation, he allegedly tried to sexually assault her. The victim resisted, which created tension at the scene.
Several villagers, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the incident has become widely discussed in the area. However, many people are reluctant to speak publicly because the accused is considered an influential local political figure.
Locals also claimed that the BNP leader had previously been involved in various controversies and misconduct. They alleged that a video showing him humiliating the headmaster of a local school had circulated on social media in the past.
Meanwhile, the matter has sparked discussions in local political circles. Some BNP leaders in the upazila said the allegation may be raised in a party meeting and discussed at the organizational level.
Attempts to contact the accused, Iqbal Hossain, for comment were unsuccessful.
Local administrative authorities have not yet made any official statement regarding the allegation, though sources say the matter may be looked into.
The incident has created a stir in the area.
