Awami League stuns with three processions in Dhaka Friday

Several thousand leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organisations brought out a mammoth procession in Tejgaon industrial area after the Jumma prayers on Friday.

They chanted slogans against the fascist-killer Yunus regime and vowed to bring back the party president, Sheikh Hasina, to power.

Tejgaon Industrial Area police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Aslam Hossain said that the procession paraded the streets near the Nabisco intersection at around 1:45pm. Police detained seven people from the scene and sent them to the Detective Branch (DB) office, where they were tortured during interrogation, party sources and relatives said.

Earlier, Awami League leaders and activists took out another procession at the GMG intersection in Tejgaon Industrial Area around 11am. The police detained one person from there.

Meanwhile, Awami League leaders and activists took out another procession on Dhanmondi 4/A road after the Jumma prayers. At that time, they raised slogans in favour of five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

Another protest programme was held in Gazipur, where several thousand activists chanted slogans after the Jumma prayers.

On Thursday, the DB police arrested Saddam Hossain, 50, former MP of Nilphamari-3 constituency, and seven leaders of the Awami League’s affiliated organisations from different parts of Dhaka. Another eight leaders were detained on Wednesday.

All those arrested have cases against them at various police stations in the capital on specific charges. They were involved in organising and destabilising the country by disrupting law and order and in creating panic among the public by holding sudden processions in various parts of the capital, police said.
