Mahila Parishad cendemns attack on Hindus in Rangpur; police took no action in 2 days

Bangladesh Mahila Parishad has demanded an impartial investigation into all incidents of communal discord, including the systematic attack on a Hindu village in Rangpur, and prompt arrest and appropriate punishment of the culprits.

These incidents are not tried or punished and often occur in society, the Mahila Parishad said in a statement.

The human rights organisation strongly demanded that the government ensure the security and human rights of people of all religions, castes, and communities.

โ€œWe have noticed through the media that several houses of the Hindu community in the area, including the house of a teenager accused of blasphemy, were attacked and vandalised in Gangachara, Rangpur.

โ€œIn this incident, the police arrested the accused teenager on charges of blasphemy. Bangladesh Mahila Parishad expresses deep concern over this incident,โ€ said the statement issued on Monday.

โ€œWe have noticed that extremist communal groups in different parts of the country are making deliberate attempts to create communal violence and anarchy in the country.

โ€œWe noticed that just a month ago, a father and son were publicly beaten and humiliated in Lalmonirhat on the pretext of blasphemy, and in the wake of an ultimatum from an extremist group in Khilkhet of the capital, a temple was publicly demolished by the railway authorities with a bulldozer.

โ€œBangladesh Mahila Parishad believes that all these misdeeds are obstacles to the establishment of communal harmony and the rule of law in the country. In addition, the lack of implementation of the law in such incidents creates opportunities for hatred, animosity, and division in the public mind.โ€

Meanwhile, media reports say that two days after the vandalism and looting incident, no case was filed as of Tuesday.

OC Al Emran said no one has been arrested so far. The affected families are taking time to file the case.

However, Gangachara Upazila Hindu Buddhist Christian Welfare Front convener Tapan Kumar said: “This incident was planned. We are trusting the administration for now. Our people are absconding. We will bring them back and move towards the case through negotiations.”
