Pro-Yunus teachersโ€™ network condemns rights violations in Gopalganj

The University Teachersโ€™ Network has condemned the interim government, led by Prof Muhammad Yunus and his National Citizen Party (NCP), for the state-sponsored massacre in Gopalganj.

In a statement issued on Sunday, five days after the killings, the pro-Yunus platform said that the local administration could avoid the bloodshed if it wanted.

The torture of a detained person with boots and not conducting an autopsy of the deceased are worrying and a violation of human rights, they said.

โ€œThese incidents bear the hallmarks of state violence. Such brutal use of force, indiscriminate firing, and loss of life are a direct threat to the country’s human rights values, democratic environment, and citizen security.โ€

The teachers also demanded a proper investigation into the use of force by the law enforcement agencies, adding that the police and other forces opened fire when violence broke out instead of preventing it first.

They said some NCP leaders triggered the violence by posting provocative statements on Facebook.

The platform also condemned the filing of cases against thousands and the arbitrary arrests of innocent people amid a curfew.

At least five people were killed on Wednesday as the Bangladesh Army fired live bullets and tortured some detainees. At least one of the deceased died due to gunshots after he was captured by a police team led by Kotalipara officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad.

The Awami League and right activists say over 20 people were killed on that day, when two advisers were instructing the army and the police to adopt brutal tactics.
