GOPALGANJ MASSACRE: Krishak League supports hartal against on July 20

The Bangladesh Krishak League has expressed solidarity with Sundayโ€™s nationwide hartal, called in protest against the brutal killings of five people in Gopalganj who demonstrated against attempts to demolish Bangabandhuโ€™s mausoleum by the radical activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) on Wednesday.

In a statement on Friday, Acting President Sheikh Md Jahangir Alam and Acting General Secretary Bishwanath Sarker Bitu urged the leaders and activists to unite everyone and observe the programme peacefully and democratically, as part of the preparations for the upcoming โ€œMarch to Jamuna.โ€ Office Secretary Rezaul Karim Reza issued the statement.

The four who were shot and tortured to death on Wednesday are Sohel Mollah, 35, a mobile accessories shop owner; Dipto Saha, 25, a clothing shop owner; Ramzan Kazi, 18, a mason; and Emon Talukder, 17, a ceramic shop employee.

Another bullet-hit injured person, rickshaw-puller Ramzan Munshi, succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Friday.

Meanwhile, the joint forces are carrying out raids at various places in the town and have picked up several hundred people, mostly the youth. The police also filed three cases naming 157 people and 2,200 unnamed others.

Earlier, four other affiliated organisations of the Bangladesh Awami League announced the general strike protesting the Gopalganj massacre, cancelling the farcical trial of Bangabandhuโ€™s daughter, Sheikh Hasina, at the kangaroo court, and demanding the resignation of the murderous, occupying, fascist government.

The Bangladesh Awami Jubo League, Bangladesh Awami Swechchhasebak League, Jatiya Sramik League, and Bangladesh Chhatra League called for a “full-scale strike” in a joint statement.

The statement vehemently criticised the unconstitutional government, backed by anti-liberation forces, for fascist Yunus’s indiscriminate and brutal shooting of the common people, students, workers, and women of the holy land of Gopalganj; against the conduct of the farcical trial against the Honourable Prime Minister Desh Ratna Sheikh Hasina in the International Crimes Tribunal; and against the people who came to power through terror, violence, and conspiracy by force.

It said that the people will thwart Yunusโ€™ conspiracy to hand over the beloved motherland to foreigners, to make it a militant stronghold, to make it an ineffective, failed, lawless state, and to turn it into a war zone, which will not be allowed to be implemented in any way. โ€œWe will remove Yunus. We will destroy him. Victory will be for the people.โ€

It added that the hartal programme will help overthrow the government through the upcoming โ€œMarch to Jamuna,โ€ when the students, youth, farmers, workers, professionals, teachers, doctors, journalists, and intellectuals of the country will play the most responsible role.

Earlier, Awami League President and five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina censured the killings and demanded justice. She also asked local leaders to ensure proper treatment of the injured people.

She said Yunus provoked violence as part of a deep conspiracy.

General Secretary Obaidul Quader also issued a statement, announcing protests for Thursday and asking party workers to prepare for the โ€œLong March to Jamuna.โ€
