71 Dhaka University teachers demand visible steps to end mob violence

As many as 71 teachers of Dhaka University have issued a statement expressing concern over the incidents of mob violence and demanding that effective and visible steps be taken to eliminate the menace.

The teachers made this demand in a statement sent to the media on Wednesday. They said that mob violence has spread its claws in different parts of the country for the past few months and is gradually increasing at an alarming rate. This is causing damage to the lives and property of the people of the country, as well as tarnishing the country’s dignity and image in the international arena.

Not only are people affected by mob violence being physically abused and humiliated, but many have already died as victims of mob violence. Women have lost their dignity; even the future lives of many innocent children have been ruined by being victims of mob violence.

The statement further said that educational institutions, law courts, media, business centres, residential buildings, historical structures, monuments of the language movement and the great Liberation War, as well as social events, are not being spared from the black claws of mob terrorism.

Detailed news and reports on this issue are also being published in domestic and foreign newspapers, television and social media. Although the law enforcement agencies talk about taking strict steps to eliminate the โ€œmobโ€, in reality, no effective measures are being seen, and the aggressive mob cannot be controlled.

The statement further said that as some responsible quarters define “mob” as a “pressure group”, “mob terrorism” is gradually taking the form of mob culture and mob terrorists are becoming more reckless and reckless.

โ€œAs teachers of Dhaka University, the cradle of free intellectual practice in the country, we are very concerned, angry and pained by these unwanted incidents of gross violation of human rights.โ€

The statement said that if there is a complaint against any person, it is desirable that it be tried according to the prevailing law of the country. But in no way can taking the law into one’s own hands and turning the country into a mob’s den be consistent with building a stable and inclusive society and state.

โ€œTherefore, we call upon all concerned quarters, including the law enforcement agencies of the state, to ensure proper implementation of the law, social justice and proper security and good governance for civil society as a whole, and to take effective and visible measures to eliminate this ‘mob terrorism’ immediately in the overall interest of the people of the country.โ€
