Chhatra League leader found dead in Mymensingh

Md Ruhul Amin Akash was the Joint Convener of Netrokonaโ€™s Kalmakanda Upazila unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League. He used to teach at Darul Arkam Madrasa. He was relieved of his job after the August 5 changeover.

Since then, he had been staying in Mymensingh, where his wife works as a nurse.

On Monday, his lifeless body was discovered near the Mymensingh Bypass around 9am. Locals said blood was coming from his nose and mouth, and the body showed signs of physical assault.

They took him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Akash is the son of Hafez Mohammad Nawab Ali of Rahimpur Beluatoli village in Nazirpur Union of Kalmakanda. Family members blamed his political rivals in Kalmakanda for the targeted killing.

On Monday, the Central Chhatra League issued a statement expressing grief and demanding swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Akashโ€™s death adds to a rising number of politically motivated killings since July, when several hundred leaders and activists were killed and over 1,37,000 imprisoned without trial in 10 months. More than 80,000 cases have been filed against the Awami League-affiliated leaders and activists.

On the other hand, 172 people, mostly Awami League members, were killed in government-backed mob violence, and at least 25 Awami League leaders and activists died mysteriously in prison custody.
