Although the countryโs electricity generation capacity is reportedly higher than demand, a nationwide power crisis has emerged due to fuel shortages and technical disruptions. According to government and local sources, the current electricity deficit has pushed load shedding beyond 2,000 megawatts.
However, the situation is not uniform across the country. In major cities like Dhaka and Chattogram, load shedding remains limited to around 1โ2 hours. In contrast, rural and remote areas are facing severe power cuts lasting between 8 to 18 hours.
People in rural regions are suffering the most. In districts such as Rajshahi, Rangpur, Kurigram, and Natore, prolonged outages are disrupting irrigation for Boro rice cultivation. Several areas in Sylhet and Barishal are also experiencing extended periods without electricity. In Mymensingh, the production of fish fry and hatchlings has been seriously affected due to the power shortage.
The crisis has also severely impacted daily life. Under extreme heat, children, elderly people, and patients are facing acute distress. Small and medium industries such as welding workshops, auto brick fields, and feed mills have seen production drop by nearly 30 percent. Fuel shortages have also made it difficult to operate generators, leaving many without alternative power sources.
Meanwhile, public discussions on social media reflect growing frustration over the ongoing electricity crisis, with users expressing anger over prolonged outages.
Officials in the power sector say that disruptions in gas and coal supply, along with technical faults in several power plants, have put pressure on the national grid. They have assured that efforts are underway to stabilize the situation.
Experts, however, warn that unless fuel supply and power generation stabilize soon, rural areas may continue to suffer from severe electricity shortages in the coming days.
