Recently released senior journalist Anis Alamgir has sharply criticized the interim government led by Dr. Muhammad Yunus, describing his tenure as one of extreme misrule. Highlighting arbitrary detentions, โmob justice,โ and widespread injustice, Alamgir labeled Dr. Yunus as one of the countryโs biggest โscammersโ and morally corrupt leaders.
Speaking on the talk show Manchitra, Alamgir shared his prison experiences and commented on the contemporary political climate. He condemned the governmentโs so-called โdustbin culture,โ judicial overreach, and acts of oppression, making strong and controversial statements about Dr. Yunusโs administration.
Recalling the famous quote of renowned artist Kamrul Hasan, โThe country today is in the hands of world shamelessness,โ Alamgir remarked, โIf Kamrul Hasan were alive today, he would have given Dr. Yunus the title of โWorld Scammer.โ Bangladesh has never seen such a huge scammer and shameless person!โ
Alamgir held interim government legal advisor Dr. Asif Nazrul chiefly responsible for the countryโs law and human rights failures. He said, โThis man talks about humanity, yet keeps innocent people behind bars one after another. When a law minister publicly reprimands judges, where does the rule of law stand?โ
He also recounted the horrors of his imprisonment, stating that he was detained without any case against him. During โremand,โ he was kept in a room infested with thousands of mosquitoes for days, with no questioning, subjected to severe mental harassment.
Alamgir strongly criticized the aftermath of the July 2024 uprising, particularly the widespread arrests and police actions. He said, โThose of us who supported the July movement have lost faith because of Dr. Yunusโs misrule. We wanted a new Bangladesh, but in 17 years, Dr. Yunus has committed double the injustice compared to even Sheikh Hasinaโs tenure.โ
He called on the current government to publish a white paper on the abuses of Dr. Yunus and his associates, and to bring the real offenders to justice to restore the rule of law in the country.
