12,000 New Millionaire Bank Accounts Added in a Year

Despite concerns over slowing economic growth, rising unemployment, and increasing poverty, the number of millionaire bank accounts in the country has seen a significant rise. According to the latest report published by Bangladesh Bank, the number of bank accounts holding deposits of at least Tk 1 crore has increased by nearly 12,000 over the past year.

Data from the central bank shows that by the end of December 2025, the total number of such millionaire accounts stood at 134,044. A year earlier, at the end of December 2024, the number was 122,081. This means that within a year, 11,963 new millionaire accounts were added to the banking system.

The report also indicates that the growth was not only annual but also accelerated in the final quarter of 2025. At the end of September last year, the number of such accounts was 128,070. Within just three months, the figure rose by 5,974 to reach 134,044 by December.

The total amount of deposits held in these accounts has also increased significantly. At the end of September 2025, the total deposits in millionaire accounts stood at Tk 821,562 crore. By December, this amount had grown by Tk 34,214 crore to reach Tk 855,776 crore.

However, officials at Bangladesh Bank noted that having a bank account with deposits of Tk 1 crore or more does not necessarily mean that the account holder is individually a millionaire. This is because large sums of money are also deposited by various institutions, and a single individual or organization may maintain multiple accounts across different banks.

Economists view the continuous rise in millionaire accounts as a reflection of growing income inequality in the country. They argue that while poverty and underemployment continue to rise, the increasing number of millionaire accounts indicates an uneven distribution of wealth in the economy.
