Police from Shahbagh Police Station detained two individuals, including a former student of Dhaka University (DU), for playing the historic March 7 speech through a sound box at Chankharpul intersection in the capital.
The incident took place on Saturday (March 7) around noon. Police also seized the sound system used to play the speech from the spot.
The detained student has been identified as Asif Ahmed. He is a former student of the Physics Department of Dhaka University from the 2018โ19 academic session and was a resident student of Shahidullah Hall. On his Facebook profile, he identifies himself as the Employment Affairs Secretary of the Shahidullah Hall unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
According to eyewitnesses, the historic March 7 speech was being played through a sound box at the Chankharpul intersection when police officers arrived at the scene and asked them to stop. At one stage, an argument reportedly took place between the police and the student. Later, police seized the sound system and detained the two individuals, taking them to the police station.
Regarding the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, Md. Moniruzzaman, told journalists, โThey were playing Bangabandhuโs March 7 speech. Since it is prohibited, they were brought to the police station.โ
He added that a decision regarding the detained individuals will be made after further discussion.
