Snatching on the Rise in the Capital: Growing Concerns Over Public Safety

The recent increase in snatching incidents in the capital, Dhaka, has raised concerns among residents. A recent robbery involving an elderly man heading out early for work has once again brought the cityโ€™s law and order situation into public discussion.

According to reports, an elderly man named Fayzur Rahman left home around 5:00 a.m. with his rickshaw van to buy vegetables. In an alley in the Jatrabariโ€“Jurain area of Dhaka, three youths allegedly threatened him with sharp weapons and took his mobile phone and around 5,000 taka. After the incident, he did not file a complaint with the police. He said many victims avoid going to the police station because they fear additional hassles.

Sources say the number of snatching incidents in Dhaka increased significantly in February. According to police data, 308 snatching cases were recorded at different police stations under the Dhaka Metropolitan Police during that month. However, security analysts believe the actual number may be much higher, as many victims do not file cases or general diaries.

Security experts say that in such situations, personal safety should be the priority. They advise victims not to resist but instead to move to a safe place and contact the national emergency service 999.

Residents have also identified several areas of the capital as comparatively high-risk. Complaints suggest that snatching incidents are more common, particularly late at night and early in the morning, in areas such as Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Jatrabari, Uttara, and Karwan Bazar.

Police officials say regular operations and patrols have been strengthened to prevent such crimes. They noted that night patrols have been increased, additional units deployed, and drives conducted against suspects. However, law enforcement officials also say that in some cases arrested offenders obtain bail and return to criminal activities.

According to analysts, controlling snatching requires effective law enforcement, faster judicial processes, and rebuilding public trust. They also emphasize the importance of increasing public awareness.

Recent incidents have once again sparked debate over the law and order situation in the capital. Residents hope the authorities will take effective steps to improve security.
