A woman was allegedly raped and murdered in her home during Sahri in Ukhiya upazila of Coxโs Bazar. The victim, Lala Bibi (30), was the wife of Abdu Shukkur, a Bangladeshi expatriate in Malaysia.
The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Tuesday (March 3) in the Purbo Morichya Madhughona Khlaar Pahaar area of Haldia Palong Union. According to family sources, assailants entered the house while Lala Bibi was having Sahri and attacked her. Hearing her screams, family members and locals rushed in and found her severely injured. She later died on the spot.
The victimโs elder brother-in-law, Abdul Alam, said Lala Bibi had marks of injury on her neck and head. The family believes she was strangled to death. They also suspect the attack may be linked to an ongoing land dispute in the area.
Ukhiya Police Officer-in-Charge, Nur Ahmad, stated that police inspected the scene and prepared an inquest report. The body has been sent to Coxโs Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy. He added that preliminary investigations show signs of rape or attempted rape, but the exact cause of death and full details will be confirmed once the autopsy report is available. Police are investigating to identify and apprehend those responsible.
Analysts note that such inhumane incidents are not new. Between 2001 and 2006, during BNPโs tenure, cases of rape, enforced disappearances, murder, and false lawsuits were widely reported, causing widespread suffering. Even today, people see echoes of that past misrule and social unrest. Citizens are calling for swift identification and punishment of the perpetrators in accordance with the law, and for security and justice to be ensured in society.
