Masood Kamal lambasts Yunus for calling Bangladesh world champion in fraud

Veteran journalist Masood Kamal has launched a fierce attack on Dr. Muhammad Yunus, chief adviser to the so-called interim government, over his statements disrespecting the whole nation, during the inauguration of the Digital Device and Innovation Expo 2026 at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre on Wednesday.

Kamal described Yunus’ remarks as arrogant, outrageous, stupid, and reflective of a disorganised mindset, possibly linked to old age. He focused on three main issues: Yunus’ blanket accusation of Bangladeshis as “world champions in fraud,” an impractical call to limit public servants’ tenure to five years, and Yunus’ apparent failure to implement his own “Three Zeros” theory during 18 months in power.

Kamal’s broadcast, which gained traction after being referenced on an Assamese television channel, has fueled public debate amid ongoing scrutiny of the interim administration. Below are the core criticisms, with Kamal’s direct quotes translated for broader accessibility.

Muhammad Yunus: A fraudster and hypocrite since childhood

According to investigations by Bangladesh Bank, newspapers, and activists, 86-year-old Dr. Yunus has been a fraudster since his childhood. He has become a global figure in microcredit by using the rural women through treachery and falsehood, and gained financially through bribery, and has also shown his greedy face shamelessly since capturing power in August 2024.

‘World Champion In Fraud’

Kamal’s strongest condemnation targeted Yunus’ claim that Bangladesh is the “world champion” in passport, visa, and document fraud, turning the nation into a “factory of fraud.” Yunus said: “Our country is the world champion in passport, visa, and fraud-related activities. We have apparently become world champions in fraud now.”

He further stated the country has become a factory of fraud”, while noting Bangladeshis’ “intelligence” enables such acts: “We have intelligence. Otherwise, we couldn’t commit fraud.”

Kamal called this a kind of foolishness and an unprecedented national insult. He said: “He (Yunus) cannot make such a comment about the entire nation. I don’t think anyone has ever insulted this nation more than this before. Dr. Yunus has done that to us, too.”

He questioned Yunus’ anecdote about a woman using a fake doctor’s certificate for a housemaid job abroad, calling it an unbelievable story and blaming recruitment agencies and the Foreign Ministry instead. Kamal defended Bengalis, saying that the Bengali nation isn’t that bad. โ€œBengalis don’t forge doctors’ certificates and go to work as housemaids there with fake documents, brother.โ€

Kamal attributed this to Yunus’ mindset and possible age-related issues, adding: “Sometimes I feel his age has advanced. When age advances, such things happen. His thinking becomes a bit disorganised. That’s how it seems to me.”

Impractical Suggestion

Kamal acknowledged partial merit in Yunus’ proposal that government officials should not serve beyond five years to prevent mental “fixation.” The chief adviser stated that their mind gets fixed in one framework if they work more than that period.

However, Kamal deemed it childish and hypocritical, noting Yunus’ long tenure at Grameen Bank. “You didn’t want to leave as MD of Grameen Bank at all… So how does it work that what applies to others doesn’t apply to you? Rules should apply to everyone.”

Kamal suggested annual tests instead. “New knowledge comes constantly… Whoever can’t adapt will be sidelined. They should have an exam every year.”

Failure To Implement ‘Three Zeros’ Theory

Kamal criticised Yunus’ “Three Zeros” (zero poverty, zero unemployment, and zero carbon emissions) as unfulfilled rhetoric.

“You are promoting Three Zeros all over the world… You were in power in one state for one and a half years. Which of these Three Zeros have you tried to implement in your country?

“Flashy talk can impress people for a short time. It doesn’t last long. The nation has already realised how much of an inflated balloon you basically are.”

The veteran journalist ended with a call for Yunus to step down: “Now I pray to Allah: when will you leave? Please go and save us.”

TIB Calls For White Paper โ€˜Three Zerosโ€™ Performance

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has called for the publication of a white paper at the end of the interim governmentโ€™s tenure to inform the public about the extent to which the interim government has fulfilled its responsibilities in line with the internationally promoted concept of โ€œthree zeros.โ€

โ€œAlongside the international advocacy surrounding the โ€˜three zerosโ€™ concept, I believe people of the country will want to know the extent to which responsibilities have been fulfilled nationally in relation to these three issues,โ€ TIB Executive Director Iftekharuzzaman said at a human chain on Dhakaโ€™s Manik Mia Avenue on Monday.
