Jatiya Party slams Consensus Commission, protests referendum

Jatiya Party (JaPa) Secretary General Shamim Haider Patwary has said that some of the political parties have already fallen into a kind of trap by going to the National Consensus Commission (NCC) or signing the July National Charter.

Some political parties are saying that the NCC has cheated. The words โ€œcheater and cheatโ€ are being uttered here. Such reforms are useless, he said at a program in Rangpur on Saturday.

Stating that the demand for a referendum is unprecedented, he said: โ€œThere is no provision for a referendum in the Constitution at the moment. If the demand for a referendum is implemented before it is passed in parliament, the National Consensus Commission will be given the status of parliament. The commission is not sovereign, not elected and not parliament. If any law is passed bypassing parliament, it will be in conflict with the Constitution.โ€

Shamim Haider said: โ€œThe commission has failed to build consensus. The commission has excluded 30 out of 56 registered political parties. The parties that went there have disagreements on many issues. One part has been excluded from the unity process, while another part has fully participated in the unity process, and the other part participated in the unity process but later completely disagreed.โ€

Noting that the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections were questionable, he added: โ€œBecause the elected government voted while standing there and influenced the elections. Regarding the administrative structure that is in the country at the moment, the information adviser himself said that they have arranged the administration according to the wishes of BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami, alongside the NCP.

โ€œIf any other party outside these three parties comes to the polls, this administrative structure will not allow that party to have a fair vote.โ€
