The rape of a young woman at the Mymensingh Medical College (MMC) morgue has angered civil society representatives, including women leaders of Mymensingh, human rights activists and top police officers amid a wave of rape and gang-rape of women and children across the country.
The accused, Abu Sayed, 19, has been arrested from Haluaghat.

According to police sources, a college student, 20, in the Ghoshber area of โโHaluaghat upazila, committed suicide on October 19. After receiving information about the incident, the police recovered the body and sent the body bearer, Abu Sayed, to the MMC morgue on a Mahendra van for an autopsy the next day.
Since the relatives of the deceased were not there, Abu Sayed took the opportunity to rape the deceased.
Later, the doctor conducting the autopsy informed the Haluaghat police that โfresh semenโ was found in the genitals of the deceased.

Upon learning of the matter, SI Jamal Mia of Haluaghat police station, the plaintiff in the case, arrested Abu Sayed from the Pathagar More area of โโHaluaghat Municipality on October 21, along with his forces. Later, he was interrogated. At that time, the accused confessed to the rape.
Abu Sayed is the son of Joynal Abedin of Khandakpara village of Haluaghat. He was working as a body carrier for the Haluaghat police station.
On October 22 afternoon, the accused was shown arrested in the case and sent to jail through the Mymensingh Chief Judicial Court.
Monira Begum Anu, General Secretary of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad Mymensingh District Branch, said that there are no words to say about this. Just calling it barbarity or incivility does not end it. We cannot even imagine such an incident in the present time. Even then, the accused should be given exemplary punishment in this incident.
Mymensingh District Human Rights Commission President AHM Khalequzzaman said that such incidents are nothing but a distorted mentality. However, it is necessary to investigate how such a heinous incident happened in a place like a morgue, a reserved area of โโa government institution.
Mymensingh Medical College Forensic Medicine Department Head Dr. Sohab Nahian said that the matter was reported to the concerned police officer as fresh semen was found in the victim’s body during the autopsy. โHowever, we cannot say where the rape incident took place.โ

Mymensingh Medical College Principal Professor Dr. Nazmul Alam Khan told Bangla Tribune that the police would be able to say where the rape incident took place. Because the police will know everything only after questioning the accused.
In this regard, Mymensingh Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Abdullah Al Mamun said that after learning from the MMC authorities, the accused was quickly arrested, and the court sent him to jail.
โHowever, it is very important that the accused should not be granted bail for the wrong he has done and that punitive action should be taken quickly. Awareness meetings are being held at various places, including mosques and madrasas, through the district police.โ
