Chittagong University student found dead with tendons cut off

Police have recovered the body of Shamim Maksud Khan Joy, a student of Chittagong University, with the tendons of his hands and feet cut–a signature murder style of the Islami Chhatra Shibir–from the seashore in Anandabazar area of โ€‹โ€‹Bandar police station in Chittagong city.

Joy, 26, was rescued from inside the forest on the seashore adjacent to Anandabazar Outer Ring Road on Sunday night and taken to the hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The deceased Shamim Maksud Khan Joy completed his graduation in Computer Science and Technology from the American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) in Dhaka. He then enrolled in a masterโ€™s in computer engineering at the University of Chittagong.

Although he was from Barisal district, he lived with his parents and family members in the Boropole area of โ€‹โ€‹Bandar residential area of โ€‹โ€‹the city. The family and the police are unable to say who killed him or whether he committed suicide.

Inspector (Investigation) of Bandar police station Zakir Hossain said: “On Sunday evening, Shamim was lying in a bloody state inside the forest on the seashore. Some locals saw him at night and informed the patrolling police members. First, the Halishahar police rescued him and took him to a local private hospital.

From there, he was taken to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, where the doctor declared him dead after tests. After receiving the news, Shamim’s body was identified by his relatives around 2am.

Assistant Commissioner (Port) of the city police Mahmudul Hasan said: “Investigations are underway to determine whether Shamim committed suicide, was murdered by someone, or was a victim of kidnapping. No clues have been found yet. The police are working. The family of the deceased student is preparing a case in this incident. The family is also unable to clearly explain how the incident happened.”

Chittagong Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Port) Amirul Islam said: “On Sunday evening, some people came forward after hearing screams. But they did not catch Shamim because his hands and feet were cut. Later, someone called 999 from the scene. Then the police went to the spot and rescued him and took him to a private hospital in the city.

โ€œFrom there, after taking him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, the doctor declared him dead. Later, the Halishahar police handed over the body to them as the incident site was Bandar police station. We are investigating the incident. We spoke to an eyewitness to the incident and found out that he wanted to know the incident from Shamim. He also took out his camera to record the video.

โ€œShamim did not want to say anything in front of the camera. When the camera was turned off, Shamim said that he did the incident himself. An anti-cutter was recovered from the scene. The eyewitness’ statement is being verified. We are collecting information. We are investigating whether it was murder or suicide.โ€
