A group of people set fire to the house of Nur Uddin Chowdhury Nayan, a former Member of Parliament of Lakshmipur-2 (Raipur) Constituency and District Awami League General Secretary, for the fourth time on Wednesday.
Nayan’s residence, Lubna Cottage, was set on fire in the Mahila College area of โโthe district town in the afternoon. At one stage, a truck was brought, and the belongings of the house were looted. At that time, a young man who identified himself as a July warrior harassed local journalist Farhad Hossain while trying to record a video.

Before this, the five-storey house was set on fire the day before the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year. The house has been abandoned ever since.
According to witnesses and police sources, a group of people gathered in the North Tehmani area in the afternoon. From there, they went to the house of former Member of Parliament Noor Uddin Chowdhury. Later, they set the house on fire.
The former MP has been on the run since August 4 last year. On that day, his house was first set on fire. On August 5, the house was looted and torched again. Later, on February 6, after Sheikh Hasina’s audio speech, the house was again vandalised and set on fire.

Meanwhile, someone was secretly renovating the abandoned house. Seeing this, a group of young men disguised as July warriors went there and stopped them. At one point, they broke a security wall and set the goods on fire.
Abdul Majed, a construction worker involved in the renovation work, said: “We were doing renovation work. At around 5pm, some young men came and asked them to stop working. Later, they broke a wall and set the furniture on fire.
Journalist Farhad Hossain said that, after setting fire, a mob brought a truck and looted some goods. โThen, when I went to make a video, they insulted me. After that, when I was going to take a picture, a young man in the guise of a July warrior came rushing to beat me. Later, I left the scene.โ

Saiful Islam Murad, the former chief organiser of the district Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said: “Renovation work was going on secretly for a long time in the residence of terrorist Nayan, the former illegal MP of Lakshmipur-2 constituency and accused in the student murder case. Angry students protested today. At one stage, they ransacked the house and set it on fire. Someone had a misunderstanding with journalist Farhad. I settled it later.โ
Firefighter Saiful Islam Raju of Lakshmipur Fire Service said that they extinguished the fire with the help of the army.
Abdul Monnaf, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Laxmipur Sadar model police station, said that there was nothing left except the infrastructure of the house. โI learned that the house was torched again.โ
