Controversial Gazipur police chief Nazmul Karim removed from post

Gazipur Police Commissioner (GMP) Nazmul Karim Khan, who has been withdrawn from his post after a controversy of abusing power while travelling from Dhaka to his workplace, is one of the few lucky officials reinstated to public service after the fall of the Awami League government last year.

An officer of the 15th BCS batch, Nazmul, was sent into compulsory retirement on February 23, 2023, while serving as superintendent of police. In September 2024, he was reinstated, promoted twice, and made DIG.

He was first attached to Police Headquarters, then appointed DIG at the Police Staff College in Dhaka, before being made commissioner of the GMP on November 11.

On May 1 this year, he also became president of the Bangladesh Police Service Association.

While holding the post of the Gazipur commissioner, Nazmul continued to live in Dhaka.

On August 24, the daily Prothom Alo reported that during his daily commute to Gazipur, a section of the Dhakaโ€“Mymensingh Highway flyover was closed to public use.

The following day, Home Adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said that Nazmul would be served a show-cause notice over the road closures.

This also appeared in a report prepared by Police Headquarters.

The report said that on his way to Gazipur, the flyover was made one-way at College Gate in Tongi, while the Dhaka-bound lane was blocked during his return.

The same report further alleged that DIG Nazmul had been using a car purchased with the personal funds of another officer. Then, the Anti-Corruption Commission opened an inquiry into his use of the vehicle.

On Monday, he was instructed to hand over responsibilities to the next senior officer and report to Police Headquarters on Tuesday. The order was issued in a letter signed by Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, who is another beneficiary of the interim government reinstated in the police after retirement.

An internal report of the Police Headquarters also highlighted the deterioration of law and order in Gazipur, including the fatal attacks on journalists and rampant extortion.

The recent report mentioned the law and order in the city as โ€œvery bad.โ€ The report said that ob violence, theft, robbery and dacoity have increased in GMP. Even though these incidents happen during the day, the officers-in-charge (OC) of the police station are playing a silent role. They collect huge sums of money from drug dealers, robbers, and mob leaders linked to Jamaat and National Citizen Party (NCP).

Meanwhile, two OCs of Tongi East and West police stations under the GMP have been transferred simultaneously. On Sunday, Tongi East Police Station OC Muhammad Faridul Islam was transferred to Chittagong Range and Tongi Westโ€™s Iskandar Habibur Rahman to Sylhet Range on an order.
