SM Sultan’s 101st birth anniversary celebrated in Narail

Narail celebrated the 101st birth anniversary of world-renowned painter SM Sultan on Sunday.

On this occasion, SM Sultan Foundation, Narail District Administration, District Shilpakala Academy, and various socio-cultural organisations paid tribute to the artist at the tomb at Sultan Complex at 9am.

Later, a prayer meeting was held to pray for the forgiveness of his soul.

The prayer was conducted by Pesh Imam Hafez Maulana Zakaria Hossain of the District Model Mosque. Earlier, a Kulkhani was held at the artist’s residence at 6am.

Among others, those present at that time were Deputy Commissioner Sharmin Akhter Jahan, Deputy Director of the Local Government Division of the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Julia Sukaina, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Lincoln Biswas, former member secretary of the Sultan Foundation Advocate Iqbal Hossain, District Information Officer Rostam Ali, Vice-President of Narail Press Club and life member of the foundation Sultan Mahmud, General Secretary Mahbubur Rashid Lablu, President of SM Sultan Shishu Charu and Karukla Foundation Sheikh Hanif, Curator of Sultan Foundation Tandra Mukherjee, and Organising Secretary of District BNP Tipu Sultan.

SM Sultan was born in the village of Machimdia in Narail town on August 10, 1924.

From 1946 to 1993, his paintings were exhibited in Shimla, India; Lahore and Karachi of Pakistan; New York, Boston and University of Michigan in the US; London; and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and the German Cultural Centre.

Sultan received the Ekushey Padak in 1982, the Swadhinata Padak in 1993, and the Bangladesh Charushilpi Award in 1986.

He was the Resident Artist of the Bangladesh Government in 1984.

The SM Sultan Memorial Museum has been built in his own house to preserve the memory of Sultan.

The long-lived artist breathed his last at the Jessore Combined Military Hospital on October 10, 1994, after suffering from respiratory problems for a long time. He was buried in the courtyard of his house in Narail.
