Engineer Mosharraf Hossain in ICU, family seeks his bail for advanced treatment

Family members of former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain have sought the governmentโ€™s intervention for his bail, as the 82-year-old Awami League leader is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (formerly PG Hospital).

Confirming the matter, Senior Jail Superintendent of Dhaka Central Jail (Keraniganj) Suraiya Akhter said that Mosharraf Hossain fell ill due to an old-age disease at midnight on August 4.

He was initially treated at the Dhaka Central Jail Hospital. Later, he was admitted to the BSMMU for advanced treatment.

Mosharrafโ€™s wife Ayesha Sultana has filed a written application with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, seeking his immediate bail for advanced treatment.

After the fall of the Awami League government on August 5 last year, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) arrested seven-time parliamentarian Mosharraf Hossain from the Bashundhara residential area on October 27.

Since then, he has been imprisoned in the Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. There are several cases against him, including politically motivated murder cases.

Mosharraf Hossain was born on January 12, 1943. He is a freedom fighter and industrialist. He served as a minister of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works and the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

Mosharraf Hossain is co-owner of Sayeman Beach Resort, formerly “Sayemon Hotel”. His father Sayedur Rahman built the hotel in 1964.

After his graduation from the University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, in 1966, he joined politics and was elected as a Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) in 1970.

A member of the Awami Leagueโ€™s Presidium, the highest policy-making body, Mosharraf Hossain was elected an MP from the Chittagong-1 (Mirsarai) constituency seven times.

His son, Mahboob Rahman Ruhel, was elected from the constituency in the 12th national election held on January 7, 2024.
