Awami League condemns brutal torture and killing inside prison

The Bangladesh Awami League has strongly condemned the premeditated killings of its party leaders and activists inside prison walls. Lately, two Awami League leaders have been brutally killed inside the prison in the last few days.

Valiant freedom fighter Yusuf Ali Mia, member of the Madaripur District Awami League, vice president of the Rajair Upazila Awami League, and president of the Tekerhat Business Association, died on July 28.

โ€œThis is a horrifying reflection of the psychopathic mindset of serial killer and mass murderer Yunus and his followers,โ€ the party said in a statement on Wednesday.

Yusuf Ali Mia

Awami League leader Yusuf Ali Mia, 70, who was in custody in Madaripur, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Prison authorities said that he was first sent to the Madaripur 250-bed hospital from Madaripur District Jail after suddenly falling ill the previous afternoon. Later, he was transferred to DMCH.

Freedom fighter Yusuf Ali Mia was arrested on February 9, after getting bail in a case of attack, vandalism, looting, and bomb blast at Rajoir police station. He was the 64th accused in the case.

Sarwar Hossain Nannu

On July 27, Sarwar Hossain Nannu, 60, joint general secretary of the Awami Leagueโ€™s Munshiganj Sadar upazila unit, died at Munshiganj General Hospital.

The authorities said Nannu had suffered a heart attack and died within minutes of arrival. He had been in jail since May 5.

Since August last year, at least 23 Awami League leaders and workers, including the duo, have been killed in prisons, while six others have died under the custody of the army and the police, according to newspaper reports.

During the same period, the Yunus-led interim government made a world record by filing over 80,000 cases against the Awami League leaders and activists, arresting around 4,00,000 people, and imprisoning at least 1,37,000 without trial.

Custodial death: 27 Awami League leaders, activists killed in 10 months

In addition to the flawed legal measures, government supporters killed several hundred leaders and activists of the Awami League in targeted attacks. In addition to these fatalities, pro-government mobs claimed the lives of around 200 people.

โ€œThe illegitimate, murderous, fascist clique of Yunus has turned the entire nation into a land of death. People are being killed indiscriminately across the country. And if the victim is an Awami League leader or activist, the cruelty knows no bounds. For this regime, the deaths of Awami League members seem to bring a kind of perverse pleasure. Itโ€™s as if the government has granted itself a license to kill them.

โ€œWith the full use of the state machinery, this regime is now carrying out premeditated killings even inside prison walls. No plea, protest, or appeal is enough to deter this extremist-terrorist group from their murderous path.โ€

The Awami League said these murders will be investigated and the perpetrators will be punished on the soil of Bengal.
