GCDG documents gross violation of human rights in Gopalganj

Canada-based Global Centre for Democratic Governance (GCDG) has demanded full investigations into each killing in Gopalganj and strict punishment for those responsible.

In a report published on Friday, the GCDG sought protection of the people from state-sponsored terror, violence, and egregious violations of human rights.

It said that on July 16, a peaceful resistance in Gopalganj against the National Citizens Partyโ€™s (NCP) โ€œMarch to Gopalganjโ€ turned into a brutal massacre, with at least five civilians killed and dozens injured by military and law enforcement forces.

Despite this, NCP leaders and certain social media influencers have once again threatened to organise another “March to Gopalganj.” NCP convenor declared, โ€œNo space for Mujibโ€™s ideals.โ€

Following the deaths, security forces launched aggressive manhunts across Gopalganj, declaring a curfew for an indefinite period and conducting house-to-house raids.

Extrajudicial killings: GCDG lists 47 deaths since September 2024

The army, along with the RAB and police, committed gross human rights violations. Security forces carried out extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and inhumane torture.

Law enforcement authorities confessed that they have arrested 164 people, although the real number will be much higher.

Backed by the unconstitutional interim government under Muhammad Yunus, the NCP has waged a violent campaign targeting Awami League supporters, religious minorities, and pro-democracy activists.

The report documents grave human rights violations, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary arrests, the destruction of national monuments, and military attacks on civilians.
