Poll: 71% will not vote if Awami League cannot participate

An online poll has found that an election without the Awami League will be a disaster, with 71% saying they will not go to the polling station, and the BNP topping the list with 14% turnout.

In the poll that began on July 8, senior journalist Masood Kamal questioned which party the viewers will vote for, given that the Awami League cannot join the next election.

In the first 21 hours, some 37,000 people cast their votes on YouTube.

The Kingโ€™s partiesโ€”Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh and the National Citizen Party (NCP)โ€”have gotten 11% and 4%.

On the poll results, Masood Kamal asked the government to assess why the people are unwilling to go to the polling stations, while the chief adviser is claiming to conduct the most beautiful election in history.

In May, the Election Commission suspended its party registration after the government banned all forms of activities until the completion of its trial at the International Crimes Tribunal.

The BNP hopes that the election will be held before February 26 next year after a meeting between its acting chairman Tarique Rahman and chief adviser Muhammad Yunus.

The Kingโ€™s parties are also hopeful of victory and may ally with Islamic parties to counter the BNP.

In several other similar opinion pollsโ€”both offline and onlineโ€”the BNP came out victorious, and Yunusโ€™ NCP failed miserably amid growing criticism for its involvement in mob violence, corruption, and attempts to defer the elections to deter a democratic transition.
