Awami League condemns mob attack on Netrokona leaderโ€™s house

A mob of the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and other Islamist parties unleashed terror in Netrokona on June 20-21 in response to a brief procession by the Awami League.

They vandalised and looted the house of District Awami League Vice President Prashanta Kumar Roy, also the former mayor of the municipality, around 8:30pm on June 20.

Earlier in the morning, Prashanta led a protest rally at the Netrokona District Awami League office and held a peaceful procession.

The Awami League has condemned the brutal mob attacks on both his town residence and village home, which left destruction in their wake.

โ€œThis incident is yet another stark reminder: violence and anarchy are the core doctrine of BNP-Hefazat. Their true face was once again exposedโ€”this time, in Netrokona,โ€ the party said.

Police arrested four leaders and activists of the Awami League and its associate organisations, but claimed that they had no information on the mob attack on the houses of Prashanta and Kailati Union Chhatra League President Tariqul Islam.

On June 20, Jamaat brought out the first protest procession at 6:30pm and held a rally in front of the Press Club. Jamaat’s municipal unit Ameer Rafiqul Islam chaired the rally, when Secretary General Md Nazrul Islam, municipal Nayeb-e-Ameer Abul Hossain Talukder, District Workers’ Welfare Federation President Kamal Uddin and others spoke.

Then, around 8pm, a protest procession was taken out from the BNP party office in the city’s Chhotobazar area. The procession was led by district BNP Convener Md Anwarul Haque. Later, it ended at the same place.

At 9:30pm, Khilafat Andolan leaders and activists held a protest procession in the city. It was led by central Assistant Secretary General Gazi Muhammad Abdur Rahim.

The attack on Prashantaโ€™s house in the city’s Borabazar area took place at around 8:30pm. The mob broke the iron gate and door and ransacked all the rooms of the four-storey house, including the furniture. A tenant’s room on the fourth floor, the water supply pipe and even the water tank were also damaged.

Prashant’s wife, elder brother and his wife, along with workers, were present at the house at the time. They said more than 150 people took part in the attack. Police did not respond to phone calls.

On the same day, around 9pm, miscreants attacked the house of Tariqul and vandalised everything, including the furniture, in the house. During this time, the miscreants looted three goats.
