AL condemns arrest of ailing Shahabuddin Azam at Benapole

The Bangladesh Awami League has vehemently protested the arrest of its Gopalganj district unit general secretary, Shahabuddin Azam, who was going to India for treatment, on Tuesday.

Shahabuddin Azam has been suffering from various diseases for a long time. He was undergoing treatment under the supervision of a doctor in Chennai, India, at regular intervals.

Since August 5, he has not received proper treatment, as the illegal interim government of fascist Muhammad Yunus has been carrying out mob violence against the Awami League leaders and activists across the country, the party said in a statement.

The government-sponsored mobs have killed hundreds of Awami League members and arrested over 3,60,000 people in the last 10 months. False and fictitious cases are being filed against everyone linked to the Awami League and its allies.

This is why Shahabuddin Azam could not go to India on time for treatment.

When his illness reached its peak, he took the initiative to go to India for treatment. However, the Immigration Police at Benapole in Jashore did not allow him to go to India and arrested him unjustly on false and baseless charges.

The statement said that Shahabuddin Azam was extremely vocal against this illegal anti-Bangladesh government.

The party demanded the unconditional release of all the leaders and activists arrested in such false cases and detained without trial.

According to media reports, Shahabuddin Azam was accompanied by his wife. She was released as there was no case against her.

Benapole police said they would hand him over to Gopalganj police as he faces cases in Dhaka and his home district.
