BNP Joint Secretary General Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie has sparked widespread discussion after reportedly purchasing a sacrificial cow worth Tk 3.2 million ahead of Eid-ul-Azha. Questions are being raised over the large expense in comparison to the annual income declared in his election affidavit.
According to the affidavit submitted to the Election Commission, Annieโs annual income was shown as around Tk 4.7 million. In that context, spending Tk 3.2 million on a single sacrificial animal has drawn public attention and triggered debate on social media.
Many people are asking where such a large amount of money came from. Critics argue that when there is a significant gap between a politicianโs declared income and visible spending, questions about transparency and accountability naturally arise.
Others, however, say the expense could have come from personal savings, family assets, or other legal sources of income.
So far, neither Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Annie nor the BNP has issued any official statement regarding the matter. As a result, public discussion over the source of the money and the legitimacy of the expenditure continues to grow.
Political analysts say greater transparency regarding the income and assets of political leaders would help strengthen public trust and reduce controversy surrounding such issues.
