Sheikh Hasina, President of the Bangladesh Awami League and former Prime Minister, has expressed profound grief and sorrow over the death of veteran politician, senior Supreme Court lawyer, former Member of Parliament, freedom fighter, and Awami League Advisory Council member Advocate Yusuf Hossain Humayun.
He passed away at around 6:00 PM on Saturday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital in the capital. He was nearly 90 years old. (Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’un).
In a condolence message, Sheikh Hasina said the nation has lost a skilled organizer, distinguished lawyer, and a leader devoted to the people. She described his life as a reflection of the long and struggling journey of the Bangladesh Awami League.
She noted that during the 1950s and 1960s, Yusuf Hossain Humayun played an important role as a student leader of the Chhatra League in Barishal and at the University of Dhaka, actively participating in the movements for Bengali nationalism, autonomy, and later the Liberation War. During the 1971 Liberation War, he also contributed as an organizer of the resistance against the genocide carried out by the Pakistani military.
Sheikh Hasina further recalled that after independence, Humayun was elected as a Member of Parliament from the then Bakerganj-4 constituency as an Awami League candidate in the countryโs first parliamentary election held under the 1972 Constitution. Although he later stepped away from electoral politics, he established himself as one of the countryโs leading lawyers and made significant contributions to upholding the rule of law.
In her message, Sheikh Hasina prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed her deepest sympathie to the bereaved family.
