173 Lawyers Petition the United Nations to Lift Ban on Awami League

A total of 173 prominent lawyers in Bangladesh have submitted a joint petition to the United Nations, calling for the removal of the ban imposed on the Bangladesh Awami League. They argue that the ban goes against democratic principles and undermines fundamental political rights.

In their submission to relevant UN human rights bodies, the lawyers state that banning a legitimate political party not only disrupts its organizational activities but also violates citizensโ€™ basic rightsโ€”particularly freedom of expression, freedom of association, and the right to participate in elections.

The petition emphasizes that a functioning democracy depends on a multi-party system and inclusive political participation. The lawyers question whether such a ban aligns with international human rights standards and warn that it could increase political polarization and harm long-term stability in the country.

They have urged the United Nations to take necessary steps to safeguard democracy, rule of law, and human rights in Bangladesh. The petition also calls for constructive dialogue among all parties to reach a peaceful and sustainable resolution.

According to the lawyers, the ban is marginalizing a large number of leaders, activists, and supporters of the party, which they describe as a matter of serious concern in a democratic state. They have called for an immediate review of the decision.

There has been no official response yet from the government or relevant authorities. However, the issue has already sparked significant debate across the countryโ€™s political arena.
