Production at Shahjalal Fertilizer Company Limited in Fenchuganj, Sylhet, has been temporarily suspended due to the ongoing energy crisis and its global implications. Authorities say the decision was taken due to a shortage in gas supply.
The companyโs General Manager (Admin), Sajjadur Rahman, confirmed the matter to the media on Monday (April 6, 2026). According to him, production at the plant has remained halted since the afternoon of April 3, following government directives.
Sources indicate that the global energy disruption triggered by tensions and conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel has significantly affected fuel supply chains. This has, in turn, put pressure on Bangladeshโs gas supply system, particularly impacting industrial sectors like fertilizer production.
Initially, the suspension will remain in effect for one month. However, officials hope that normal operations will resume in May if gas supply stabilizes.
Earlier, on March 28, an emergency meeting chaired by the Secretary of the Energy and Mineral Resources Division decided to implement gas rationing across major fertilizer factories from April to June. As part of that plan, production at Shahjalal Fertilizer Company has been suspended for April.
Meanwhile, steps have been taken to ensure uninterrupted gas supply to Ghorashal Polash Fertilizer PLC. Additionally, production at Karnaphuli Fertilizer Company Limited (KAFCO) will be adjusted under the rationing system.
The government says this strategic approach aims to maintain a stable supply of fertilizers for the agricultural sector during the energy crisis by ensuring phased gas distribution across different plants.
