Diesel Crisis Halts Trawlers in Patharghata, Fishermen Left Strandedโ€”Economic Concerns Grow

Fishing activities at BFDC, one of the countryโ€™s largest fish landing centers in Patharghata, Barguna, have nearly come to a halt due to a severe diesel shortage. Over the past several days, more than a hundred trawlers have been unable to venture into the deep sea due to the fuel crisis, leaving fishermen and trawler owners in serious difficulty.

Rows of anchored trawlers at the landing station stand as silent witnesses to the ongoing crisis. Fishermen say that without going to sea, their daily income comes to a complete stop. Many have been sitting idle for days, facing growing uncertainty and financial hardship.

Local trawler owners report that the sudden disruption in diesel supply has made it impossible to maintain regular fishing operations. This has not only affected the livelihoods of fishermen but has also created instability across the broader fisheries sector.

Experts warn that if the situation persists, it could lead to a shortage of fish supply in the market, potentially driving up prices. At the same time, the export-oriented fisheries industry may also face setbacks, posing risks to the countryโ€™s overall economy.

However, there are allegations that no clear or effective measures have yet been announced by the authorities to resolve the crisis. Fishermen have called for the immediate restoration of diesel supply so they can return to sea and resume their livelihoods.

Stakeholders believe that the crisis highlights weaknesses in fuel supply management and planning. They have urged the authorities to take prompt and effective action to address the issue and prevent further economic disruption.
