Recent increases in violent crime in Khulna city have raised concerns about the overall law and order situation. Over the past two months, at least eight killings have been reported in the city, five of which allegedly involved the use of firearms. More than 50 people have been injured in these incidents.
According to local residents and observers, this pattern of recurring violence is reminiscent of earlier periods when clashes and shootings over territorial dominance were common in different parts of the city.
Law enforcement sources say that at least 30 individuals have been named as accused in connection with recent incidents. However, allegations have emerged that many of the accused, after being released on bail, are becoming involved in criminal activities again.
A senior officer of Khulna Metropolitan Police, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, โIn some cases, it is being observed that offenders, after being released on bail, are engaging in similar crimes again, which is creating challenges in maintaining law and order.โ
Experts believe that it is difficult to control the situation through law enforcement efforts alone. Tania Sultana, a law department teacher at Khulna University, said, โAlongside law enforcement, the effectiveness of the judicial process, social awareness, and administrative coordination are essential.โ
She further added that without long-term strategies and effective coordination, it will be difficult to achieve sustainable improvement in crime control.
Public concern over safety is increasing among city residents. Many believe that without swift arrests and proper prosecution of offenders, the situation may further deteriorate.
Authorities have stated that the incidents are being taken seriously, and investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to bring those responsible under the law.
Analysts emphasize that ensuring public safety will require not only effective law enforcement but also greater accountability and coordinated efforts within the judicial system.
