Allegations of nepotism have emerged against Abdur Rahman Sani, Assistant Private Secretary (APS-2) to the Prime Minister, shortly after the new administration assumed office. It is alleged that a company owned by his elder brother has been granted approval to establish an Export Processing Zone (EPZ) in Brahmanbaria.
According to an official notice issued by the Prime Ministerโs Office on Sunday (March 29), a proposal to set up an EPZ in Binauti Union under Kasba Upazila of Brahmanbaria district has been approved. The proposal was submitted by โBhuiyan Global Foundation,โ which is expected to implement the project in the coming days.
However, the approval has sparked widespread debate after it was revealed that the chairman of the organization, Kabir Ahmed Bhuiya, is a BNP-affiliated leader and the elder brother of APS-2 Abdur Rahman Sani. Kabir Ahmed Bhuiya had also sought nomination from the Brahmanbaria-4 (Kasba-Akhaura) constituency but was not selected in the final party decision.
The development has raised questions in political circles regarding transparency and accountability in the approval process, particularly given the close familial ties between a key government official and the beneficiary organization.
Critics argue that granting such benefits to a family memberโs company so soon after assuming office sends a negative signal about governance and fairness. They have called for a transparent investigation and clarification from the authorities.
As of now, no official statement has been issued by the government or concerned parties addressing these allegations.
It is worth noting that Abdur Rahman Sani was appointed as Assistant Private Secretary (APS-2) to the Prime Minister through a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration on February 18. The notification stated that he was appointed on a contractual basis, subject to relinquishing any other professional or business engagements during his tenure.
The incident has reignited debate in political and public spheres over whether this was a coincidence or a case of misuse of power, with no clear explanation yet provided.
