Chinese Embassy Expresses Concern Over Jamaatโ€™s Statements

The Chinese Embassy in Dhaka has expressed concern over statements made by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on social media regarding a recent Eid relief distribution program in Mirpur-10, sparking discussion in diplomatic circles.

On Tuesday (March 17), the Chinese Embassy distributed food packages among more than a thousand underprivileged residents in the Dhaka-15 constituency ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. The event was attended by Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Shafiqur Rahman, along with other embassy officials.

The controversy began after Jamaat-e-Islami, through its verified Facebook page, described the initiative as a โ€œjoint effortโ€ between the party and the Chinese Embassy. The issue drew further attention when the party posted multiple updates with varying descriptions of the same event, leading to confusion.

In response, the Chinese Embassy issued a statement on its verified Facebook page at 11:05 PM on Tuesday, stating that while the ambassador did attend a charitable event, some of the content circulating on social media was not consistent with the facts. The embassy said it had โ€œnoted with concernโ€ the discrepancies.

The statement further emphasized that Chinaโ€™s policy toward Bangladesh remains consistently friendly and cooperative. It reaffirmed Chinaโ€™s support for Bangladeshโ€™s elected government and reiterated its commitment to working closely with the government to promote the welfare of the people and strengthen bilateral relations.

Earlier, the embassy had clarified in a separate post that the Eid relief distribution was solely its own initiative and saw participation from a large number of local residents. Ambassador Yao Wen stated that Bangladesh and China are โ€œcomprehensive strategic cooperative partners,โ€ and that such humanitarian initiatives help deepen the friendship between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman expressed gratitude for Chinaโ€™s assistance, describing it as a reflection of Chinaโ€™s sincere friendship toward the people of Bangladesh. He also expressed hope for stronger ties between the two countries in the future.

It is worth noting that a similar event held last year in Gazipur, where the Chinese ambassador and Jamaat leaders jointly attended a blanket distribution program, had also drawn public attention.
